Architecture and Technology: Structure and Facade

Structure ;and Facade

Even the citizens of Frankfurt, who are used to a wonderful skyline, have never seen such a tower: the MAIN TOWER is the first high-rise building in Europe with a fully-glazed facade.

As a result, the building gives a far lighter and more transparent impression than conventional skyscrapers, something that naturally fits in wonderfully with the public character of the MAIN TOWER. At the same time, the facade makes an important contribution to providing the offices with light and ventilation. Because the 2,550 windows can be opened outwards parallel to the facade, there was no need for a complete air-conditioning system. The windows even close automatically if the wind blows at more than 70 km/h or the temperature falls below 5° C.

With a basic framework emphasized by bronze, the facade of the square tower forms a clear formal counterweight to the round tower. The facade of the predecessor building, which is protected as a historical structure, has been integrated into the base of the new building - not to stress its history, but rather as a visible contrast between the past and present.
