Light art in the MAIN TOWER – the highlights of Helaba’s art collection

The Luminale is an event that is dedicated to the theme of light and has taken place every two years since 2002 at the same time as the Light+Building trade fair in Frankfurt. Between 13-18 March 2016, works of light art and light installations could be seen in public and private buildings as well as in prominent places in and around Frankfurt as part of the Luminale event.

In 2016, Helaba participated for the first time in the biennial light art event with two highlights from its art collection. From 14-18 March 2016, both the monumental sound and video installation by the American video art pioneer Bill Viola and the neon sculpture installed in 2013 by the young Frankfurt artist Silke Wagner were accessible to a wide audience.

Today, light art is an independent artistic genre next to painting, sculpture and photography, which uses and consciously exhibits the application of light and illuminants as aesthetic media.

In large neon letters, the words “Grey turns to Blue” form the shape of a big cloud. This large-format light installation, which was produced to be site-specific for Helaba, is a work by the artist Silke Wagner, who lives in Frankfurt.

The approx. 20-minute video installation by the American artist Bill Viola was conceived in the year 2000 for permanent exhibition in the foyer of the MAIN TOWER. The five-metre high installation is the first work of video art to be permanently installed outside of a museum in a public space.
